There is a path without stairs that extends straight to the mountain’s summit.
Since ancient times, the people of this region have climbed their ways up on this path breathlessly,
and sometimes children played on it sliding down.
I placed a straight, white railing along the path.
At dusk, it emits a straight line of light.
Will the light reach the ships and planes that go before us?
Will it reach all the way to the cosmos?

Necklace: Carrying Stones up the Mountain2021   Kunisaki Peninsula Culture Tourism Promotion Project   Mt. Gion, Kunisaki, Oita, Japan

The Kunisaki Peninsula, which protrudes into the sea like a parabolic antenna,
has historically been a destination for a variety of cultures and objects arriving from all quarters.
I thought of this as I carried stones from Okinawa and Setouchi across the sea, from Hokkaido,
and used them to create a circle on top of the mountain: a necklace dedicated to Gionyama.
My hope is that as people come here, as people climb the mountain, the number of stones will grow
and the necklace will flourish, becoming ever-living.
